of the Year Award is chosen from all nominations received. This award goes to a youth who
has shown an outstanding combination of leadership in both the school and community. The winner of the Air Canada/First Air Youth of the Year Leadership Award is ... Tamara Stard This young woman has contributed greatly to her school and the community of Yellowknife. Through school she is involved with SADD, Yearbook Committee and various talent shows. She is always willing to lend a hand and help out in any possible way within the community. She teaches Sunday School at the Yellowknife United Church, is a peer educator with Aids Yellowknife and is also an active volunteer with Youth Volunteer Corps. She shows great leadership qualities through these activities. She serves as a role model for other youth and encourages their involvement within different groups. She is both reliable and instrumental in initiating and following through with tasks. As one of her nominations read, Tamara Stard is an example of what can be done when diligence and organization are combined with community spirit. She leads by example. |

Award goes to a student between grades 9-12 in our district who has shown outstanding
leadership in the school community. The nominees for this years award are: Jana Christisen Kate Johnson Jennifer Sharman The winner of the Yellowknife Education District No. 1 Senior Leadership Award is... Jennifer Sharman According to the judges, Jennifer Sharman's nominations showed very clearly a young woman who is dedicated to leadership. Among many other activities this year, she served as Sir John Franklin High Student Council President. As one of her nominations read: Jennifer leads by example with high marks, good attendance and maximum participation in many school activities. She is a thoughtful, reflective young woman with a humanitarian approach to life. She often motivates her peers and pushes them to greater accomplishments. |

Stephen Murphy Stephen has serve on the St. Patrick High school Student Council as its president. According to one teacher, he has been the backbone of this years student council. He has also served as Grad Council Vice-President. As a leader, Stephen has proven to be effective, efficient and responsible. He is well-known for following through on initiatives. As a student representative with cabinet, he has played a role in many of the important decisions made in his school community. Stephen is truly deserving of this award. |

Kurtis Anderson This young man is a well-rounded individual who shows a positive attitude which has influenced many of his peers. He is the President of the Student Council at Range Lake school. He is an excellent role model and young leader. |

Jesse Noseworthy This young lady exhibits great leadership skills. Throughout her attendance at Weledeh, she has been involved with many aspects of school such as cheerleading, choir, library club and office helper. As well, she is a member of Student Council. Through this she has been involved with running the canteen and initiating fundraisers. She was recently selected to represent Weledeh School at the inauguration ceremony for HMCS Yellowknife. |

The Sports Leadership Award goes to a youth
who has shown committment, encouragement and vision in the sports community. The nominees for the Sports Leadership Award are: Mike Argue George Patterson Starr Stinson There was a tie in this category. The winners of the Sports Leadership Award are... Starr Stinson and Geaorge Patterson Starr Stinson and George Patterson have both displayed great leadership qualities in sport this year. As a result, the judges had a difficult time in deciding their choice. Unable to find something that would distinguish one from the other, they choice to call it a draw. Both have done exceptionally well within their sports. This evening, however, we are celebrating skill in terms of leadership and in the case of these two individuals, they are exemplary especially in terms of their many hours of volunteer coaching. |

| Cathy Dalton | The Youth Employee Leadership Award goes to a
youth who is or has been employed in the community of Yellowknife and demonstrates
leadership within their working environment. The nominees in this category are: Cathy Dalton Buddy Luxon Megan Munroe The winner of the Youth Employee Leadership Award is... Cathy Dalton Cathy Dalton has done an exceptional job while working at Wal-mart. She holds a supervisory position over the cashiers and customer services desk. Her nomination was submitted by a customer who felt that the work she does shows commitment and responsibility that is the foundation of a good leader. This sentiment has been echoed by her employer. Cathy has proven herself to be a young employee that can set the standards for others. |

who has shown leadership in the community through volunteer work. Angela Masongsong Angela has become a well known volunteer throughout the community. Through her many hours at the Arctic Winter Games office, she showed dedication, commitment and leadership. She is an active member of the Yellowknife Youth Corps as well an an influential member of St. Patrich High Achool Students Against Drinking and Driving. Angela is dependable, hard-working and dedicated to the causes she represents. |

| Kevin Laframboise | The Adult Leadership Award goes to an adult
who has assisted in the promotion and development of youth leadership within the
community. It was decided by this years organizing committee to only allow non-school related leadership activities to be considered in the case of those in the teaching profession. The nominees for this category are: Kevin Laframboise Deputy Fire Chief Mike Lowing Michèle Thoms The winner of the Adult Leadership Award is ... Kevin Laframboise Kevin has been the driving force behind the development and success of the Side Door. He has dedicated countless hours to the development of a safe, comfortable place for the young people of this community. He has shown a respect for them that helps develop trusting realtionships. Kevin has served as a role model and inspiration to the youth he deals with. |

| Yellowknife Direct Charge Co-operative | The Corporate Leadership Award goes to a
for-profit organization that promotes and supports youth leadership. The judges found this
to be a difficult category to evaluate. Due to a number of reasons, they have not
stipulated nominees as in the other categories. As a result... The winner of the Corporate Leadership Award is ... Yellowknife Direct Charge Co-Operative This business has a long record of community involvement in Yellowknife. As one of the nominations read, they have worked with schools and other organizations to provide opportunities for youth development and leadership Among other things, the co-op has served as a work experience partner with schools. Students who do not benifit from traditionally academic instruction have had the opportunity to experience the skills and attitudes whcih lead to success in the workplace. They are truly deserving of the corporate leadership award. |

| Storefront for Voluntary Agencies | The Excellence in Youth Leadership Award goes
to a non-profit government agency or community group that has contributed to the
development of youth leadership in the City of Yellowknife. The winner of the Excellence in Youth Leadership Award is... Storefront for Voluntary Agencies Storefront has been a leading force this past year in the development of youth leadership initiatives. They sponsored the formation of the Youth Volunteer Corps which has played a vital role in increasing the exposure of positive youth role models to our community. They have held leadership workshops for young people in preparation for such events as the Rotary Leadership workshop held last spring. they ahve showed a committment to the dvelopment of youth leaders that can only serve to enhance their position in our communty. |
